Impact of Declining Economy on Health Coverage, State Budgets

The Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured has released a report on the impact of unemployment on health coverage, Medicaid/SCHIP and state budgets, along with an analysis of previous state strategies for reigning in Medicaid costs and federal fiscal assistance.
There’s a summary chart here.
A one percent rise in the nation’s unemployment rate is projected to increase the number of uninsured by 1.1 million and result in an additional 1 million (600,000 children and 400,000 adults) enrolling in Medicaid, increasing state Medicaid spending by $1.4 billion at time when their tax revenues would fall by 3 to 4 percent.
